The third item I've ever made for metahuman and In Marvelous designer!
The challenge I gave myself was to make sure a belt would be wrapped over something chunky. I also really wanted to learn more about belts and how you can make them in marvelous designer. It was also at that point I found out you can add stitches to items :)
For the texturing, I ended up taking a bit of a different approach compared to most 3D fashion pieces, where I used the Ambient occlusion, and mixed that with the diffuse map. I just feel it adds a nicer depth to the item! :)
Looking back at this after a couple of weeks have past, I do think it's a lovely item, but I do now know how to render stitches properly. In this piece they feel a bit too 'drawn' on and that does make this piece feel less realistic because of it.
The skirt is in this case just a solid colour, but I have been hoping to give it maybe a plaid texture in the future if I ever were to improve it (or give it other styles!).
The render shows it as a retopologized item, which I managed to get down to about 7k polys, which I think is actually quite impressive! However, I know now that retopologizing folds is actually quite important to do well. It has a couple of mistakes where the fold flow is somewhat ignored, and it therefore can at times have these more 'squarer' folds than intended.
But again! This was a study piece after all! :)
